Pop on over for a peek inside - 2 of 3

Welcome back!  Last week we took a look at the first floor, in the first of our 3 part house tour series.  This week, we're checking out the basement.  Just like last time, I put together an Image Location Plan to keep you oriented as we look at the pics.

OK, let's see the pics...

1 - At the bottom of the stairs, we have the (from L to R) bathroom, bedroom, and mechanical room

2 - Doesn't look much like a bathroom yet, but it will

3 - Looking toward the rec room

In my post about our house having a logo, I referenced Matthew Frederick and his book, 101 Things I learned in Architecture School.  It's a good book, so I'll reference it here again.  Here is one of the pages:

Because our lot is so sloped, we had an opportunity to create a basement that didn't feel like a basement.  I wanted it to feel as bright and open as possible, so to emphasize that, it was important for the space just before the rec room to feel a little tighter and not quite as bright.  Here, check this out:

• Image 1 - at the bottom of the stairs there isn't any natural light
• Image 3 - you can see the rec room, but before getting into the open space, you need to walk through the hall between the stairs and the bathroom wall.
• And then Image 4...

4 - BOOM!!! Big, bright, open space. I LOVE it. The transition from the hall to the rec room is my favorite part of the basement. This space will technically be a play room right now, but...

5 - ...as Stinky Face and Monkey get older, it will become a rec room, and then a more adult space with a wet bar (that's what the alcove is for!)

So there you have it.  Basement tour complete.  Check back next week when we take our first ever look at the second floor.
