Most homeowners use the word stress to describe everything that feels bad during a remodel, but not all stress is the same. Understanding the difference between stress and distress can completely change how you experience a project and how quickly you recover when things get hard. Stress is an activating emotion, which means it shows up when you make meaningful decisions and you're emotionally invested in something. It may show up as thinking about the project more than usual, feeling energized but uneasy, or being focused, alert, or slightly on edge. Crucially, when you’re experiencing stress (not distress), you can still think and feel at the same time. You may be uncomfortable but you’re not out of control. So then there's distress... Distress is what happens when stress overwhelms your system, showing up as reactivity instead of reflection or even the inability to make decisions. It can cause you to shut down or spiral and a lot of the time it pulls people into an all-or-nothing way of thinking. A simple way to recognize distress is to ask, "can I pause before I respond?" If you feel like you have to fire off the email, make the call, or confront someone immediately without taking a beat, you’re likely in distress. Remodeling or building a new home inevitably involves stress. In this process, stress might look like eagerly awaiting design feedback or budget updates while, distress could show up as avoiding calls, writing angry emails, or catastrophizing outcomes. During home projects, distress often emerges when communication breaks down and expectations aren’t clear. From there homeowners can end up feeling powerless and their trust in the design professionals quickly erodes. When you can name the difference, you gain options: Stress can be worked with and distress can be interrupted. So how exactly do you do this? Good news! You don’t need years of therapy to use one of the most helpful tools when it comes to catching stress that could turn into distress: Say it out loud: “I’m distressed about this.” Or "I’m really uncomfortable with what’s happening.” Naming the experience brings it into conscious awareness, where your brain can start organizing instead of spiraling. Pair that with movement (walking, stretching, using resistance bands) to discharge physical tension, and many people find they naturally return to a more manageable stress state. So let's review: Stress during remodeling doesn’t mean you’re failing and distress doesn’t mean you’re doomed. Both of these are simply signals and knowing the difference between stress and distress can help you protect your energy, your relationships, and your decision-making when it matters most.
