:DH House Tour: Our Modern Farmhouse Kitchen

A couple months back, we toured our nursery in the first ever Designed Happy house tour.  Now that Pancake and I have decided to sell our house, there may not be much time left for additional tours (insert sad face emoji here).  As such, I wanted to give you a tour of our modern take on a traditional farmhouse kitchen.

First things first, let's take a look at the old and new kitchen plans:

There were a few things we wanted to accomplish with the space plan for the kitchen:

1. Open the kitchen up to the dining room
2. Make better use of the space in the kitchen
3. Increase the amount of cabinetry and counter space
4. Fit a large farm sink and 36" 6-burner professional range

From the old to new plans, you can see that the appliances didn't move much.  Really, the sink moving a few inches to the left was the only location change we made.  We did make the window above the sink smaller though.  That allowed us to add an extra wall cabinet to the left of the range.  We also opened the wall between the kitchen and dining room, which allowed us to add a large island.  When we were done, we went from 9 cabinets in the old design to 15 cabinets in the new design - all in the same amount of space.  Cheers to efficiency!

The one light in the kitchen was a pendant hanging in front of the frig.

Not great right?  It needed some love.  As you can see, it was a dark, private, inefficient space.  The cabinets, counters, appliances, lighting, flooring, and windows were all trash.  It was a total gut.  Here's how it looks now:

Pretty great, right?  Thanks, I think so too.  Here's a rundown of what we're looking at/what changed:

• Custom wood cabinets with soft close hinges, full extension drawers, roll-out shelves, lazy susans, spice pull out, and two-piece crown molding in a 2-tone color scheme
• Cambria Torquay quartz countertops
• Full height mosaic marble backsplash
  
• Franke 30" farm sink 
• Viking 36" 6-burner gas range with glide-out oven racks
• Viking french door refrigerator
• Microwave drawer
  
• Restoration Hardware cabinet knobs and pulls 
• Custom exterior Dutch door
• Pella Architect Series wood windows with exterior aluminum cladding (maintenance free!!)
• French casement window over the sink
• New recessed and pendant lighting
• New GFCI outlets

Sometimes I look back at the old pictures of the kitchen and have a hard time believing that it actually existed.  Our old farmhouse deserved a better kitchen than it had, and I'm so happy that Pancake and I were able to create one for it.
